I just got my new e-reader as a gift for the holiday (Amazon’s Fire-somewhat odd since I am an Apple gal…), and in an ironic twist, the first book I read was the biography “Steve Jobs”.

As a marketing person, I was trained on and practiced the traditional “4 P’s”, but after reading this riveting story of his life and loves, I realized I had it all wrong. Steve Jobs truly REDEFINED the “4 P’s, because he could!

He embodied PASSION, accepted nothing less than PERFECTION (in himself and others), defined what it means to PERSEVERE, and believed above all that great PRODUCTS are a result of great people and their genuine love for creating a user experience that could not be emulated.

I walked away from this amazing book both loving and hating Steve Jobs, but the one thing I can say for sure is that I admire that he was true to himself. Warts and all. His absolute brilliance and unending quest to reshape the consumer experience is unparalleled in today’s corporate culture (or any culture for that matter).

But the personal lessons he imparted will stay with me forever. I truly embrace the new “4 P’s” and will think about them as I approach everything in my life (personally and professionally). And most importantly, I hope that I can lead and inspire in my own way. Warts and all.

Wishing everyone good energy for the new year. Here are some life/work things (my humble opinion) to start you down a good path in 2012:

1. Be passionate. Everything starts with the desire to be more than you are today.

2. Have a vision. All meaningful change begins with one.

3. Keep your eyes wide open. Truly see everything going on around you.

4. The right crowd. Surround yourself with positive, and great, people.

5. FOCUS. You can’t be all things to all people. But you can be very important to some.

6. Great everyday. Do something that changes the game (doesn’t have to be big) every day.

7. Follow-Through. Do what you say you’re going to do.

8. Get going. Take the first step.
